The work
Sampsa and the Swan was inspired by Finland's national epic poem, The Kalevala. It played a key role in Finland's independence, helping Finns reconnect with their identity and nationality. In the past two years, the idea of Finnish national pride has been appropriated by a political party known as Perussuomalaiset (The True Finns), using nationalism and identity politics to create fear and close borders. By exploring The Kalevala through music and sound toys, I hope to share Finnish culture with the world and to remind Finns of the magic and positivity of Finnish identity.
Artist's biography Oliver Blank is a composer. He composes music, builds sound toys and creates public installations too. Oliver lives in Helsinki and New Orleans.
