Belfast Community Circus School

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Organisation biography
Belfast Community Circus School is the longest running circus school on the island of Ireland, set up in 1985, and is at the core of the contemporary circus and street theatre movement in Northern Ireland.

From humble beginnings introducing community circus to Northern Ireland during a time when there was a desperate need for positive shared experiences for young people from different communities, it has grown to become an internationally recognised school in the field of social circus, a training space for professional performers and teachers, a centre for youth circus programmes and adult classes, and has a busy Outreach workshop section which works with various youth and community groups both within the building and across Northern Ireland and occasionally in the Republic of Ireland. BCCS also endeavours to change people's perceptions of the art-form, which is too often discredited.
